Abstract

526,862. Winches. RING, J. March 27, 1939, No. 9558. [Class 78 (v)] Means for guiding the rope evenly on to a winch drum comprise an outer steering device and an intermediate guide consisting of a curved member, the curve being such that the length of rope between the outer steering device and the point of contact of the rope and drum is always constant. Fig. 2 shows an intermediate member in the form of a rod 4 curved upward from each end B<SP>1</SP>, B" to its middle B. The rope 2 follows this curve as it passes from the outer steering eye A to wind on the drum 1, and friction may be reduced by passing the rope over a reel sliding over the rod 4, or by replacing the rod by a pulley wheel carried on the outer end of a pivoted arm. Fig. 7 shows a development of this latter form, in which the lower end of the pulley carrying arm 6<SP>1</SP> is fitted with a wheel 8 riding on a curve 9. Fig. 10 shows a further form in which a bulged roller 15 takes the place of the rod 4. To compensate for the increase in effective diameter of the drum as more layers of rope are wound on, a construction shown in Fig. 13 may be employed. The intermediate guide consists of a pulley 21 suspended beneath a truck 25 riding on curved rails 22, and the outer steering pulley 3 is carried on a lever 18 pivoted at 19 and fitted with a roll 20 at its inner end which bears on the coiled rope and rises therewith, thus lowering the pulley 3 and maintaining, in conjunction with the curve of the rails 22, constancy of length between the pulley 3 and the drum contact point. Fig. 14 shows a modification of this type which allows for change of direction of approach of the rope to the winch, the device pivoting about the drum axis 1<SP>1</SP>. The intermediate guide 5<SP>1</SP> is here of the form shown in Fig. 7.
