Abstract

412,577. Winding bobbins. TENNANT, W. J., 111, Hatton Garden, London.-(Copperweld Steel Co. ; Glassport, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) Dec. 24, 1932, No. 36596. [Class 120 (ii).] Apparatus for the electrodeposition of metal on a wire or core comprises bobbins for the supply and reception of the core and means for maintaining it under considerable tension (which may approach the yield point) and for rotating it about its axis during its passage through the depositing bath. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 3 the core 6 is unwound from a supply drum 2 and passes between rollers 40, 41 and round a snubbing wheel 43 in the reverse direction. A wobbler ring 45 is keyed to rotate with the wheel 43, being maintained by a guide 50 in contact with the flange 51 and pressed down by a wedge 49 at the opposite point to maintain the core on leaving in alignment with guiderolls 44. The drum is mounted in a frame 13 which is rotated by a wheel 14. To permit development of tension in the core the wheel 43 is engaged by brake-blocks 52 adjusted by screws 61. The winding apparatus for the thickened core is mounted on a frame 11, Fig. 8, which is rotated by a wheel 12 at the same speed as the frame 13 at the supply end. The core 6 passes over a drum 70 and a wheel 71 and is received on a reel 10. The reel 10 is driven through gearing by a motor 72 connected to contact rings 94. The core is guided on the drum 10 by fingers 83 on a carrier mounted on a screw 85 having forward and return threads, the screw being driven by a chain from the drum 10. To prevent release of tension when the motor is stopped the frame 11 is provided with a head 98, Fig. 9, comprising spring-pressed jaws 101 mounted in converging guides so as to permit the core to move to the right but to grip it when not so moving. Specifications 368,412, 412,563, 412,582, [all in Group XXXVI], are referred to.
