Abstract

702,414. Cable drums. BUTTERLEY CO., Ltd., and WESTMORLAND, A. G. Aug. 6, 1952 [Aug. 27,1951], No. 20118/51. Class 99 (2). A drum a for an electric cable c carrying current to an electro-magnet suspended from an overhead crane has a helical groove b to accommodate the cable and is carried on trunnions e, m, one of which is hollow and extends outside the drum and carries slip rings f for supplying current to the cable on the drum. The cable passes through the hollow trunnion. The drum may be rotated through gears h, g and by a sprocket wheel i; alternatively the sprocket wheel is secured directly to one of the trunnions. A casing may cover the gears and slip rings. There may be a wheel n engageable in the groove b and rotatable on a sleeve o loose upon a shaft p parallel with the axis of the trunnions, and a wheel q secured to the sleeve and grooved to accommodate the cable, so that when the cable is paid out from or coiled onto the drum the wheel q is laterally traversed to keep the cable in the groove b; alternatively, there is a wheel laterally movable along the shaft p and having grooves which engage two convolutions of the cable simultaneously, or a drum having a plain peripheral surface and located at such a distance from the drum a that the cable can only pass between the drums when in the groove b.
