Abstract
920,542. Cable drums. GARRETT CORPORATION. Aug. 11, 1960 [Aug. 14, 1959], No.27909/60. Class99(2). [Also in Group XXX] The cable drum 9 of a hoist carries a helical cable retainer 13 the gaps between the turns of which overlie the turns of the cable 12. The gaps between the retainer turns are normally sufficiently narrow to retain the cable on the drum, but they are strained apart locally in the region where the cable leaves the drum. During winding and unwinding, the cable is guided by a block 47 movable axially of the drum along a rod 4 and incorporating a guide wheel 34 whose flanges provide the means for holding the retainer turns apart. The block 47 also carries means for holding the turns of the retainer at their normal spacing outside the region immediately adjacent the guide wheel 34. In the form shown this means is a spool 48, Fig. 3, with flanges 49 spaced to register with the gaps of the retainer. In an alternative construction (not shown) two arms carried by the block 47 extend from the region of the guide wheel 34 circumferentially of the drum in opposite directions. One of these arms carries a channe section member whose flanges grip the remote edges of two adjacent retainer turns and the other arm carries a pressure shoe which is resiliently urged against the adjacent edges of these turns. The hoist shown is driven by an electric motor through gearing which includes an epicyclic gear whose planet pinions 29 engage internal ring gears 31, 33 on the fixed end cover 32 and the drum 9 respectively.
