A device for taking up slack in the cable of an electric appliance comprises a fixed drum 1, Fig. la, around which the cable 6 is wound by a rotary disc 3 carrying guide pulleys 10, 12, 13, 16. The free end of the cable 6 may pass through the centre of the drum 1 and disc 3 (as shown) or may be guided axially away from the drum by guide rings or pulleys (not shown). The disc 3 is rotated by a spring 8 and may be provided with a locking means.
