Abstract
981,526. Multiple drum winches. NAUTEC CORPORATION. Oct. 18, 1961, No. 37336/61. Heading B8B. A winch comprises two peripherally grooved hauling drums 13, 14 which are driven to move the load and a storage drum 17 which feeds cable to and from the hauling drums. The grooves in each of the hauling drums are progressively reduced in diameter over at least the first two turns reckoned from the end where the loaded cable C leaves them, i.e. from the left in Fig. 2. The end turn 13g of the groove on one of the drum 13 stands a little proud of the corresponding end turn of the other drum 14. This turn 13g is formed in an overrun pulley 28 on the same shaft as the remainder of drum 13, the pulley being driven with the drum in one direction of rotation thereof but not in the other. The winch is driven by a worm drive contained in housing 12 and directly coupled to the twin drums 13, 14. To keep the cable between the hauling drums and the storage drums taut during winding the worm drive is also coupled to storage drum 17 through gearing causing it to rotate somewhat faster than the hauling drum but incorporating a frictional clutch. The drum 17 and overrun pulley 28 of drum 13 are both driven when the winch is winding but are not driven when it is unwinding. The unidirectional coupling of the drive to these members is achieved in each case by the use of a clutch such as is shown in Fig. 7. When the drive shaft 45 of this clutch is rotated in the direction indicated a cam member 44a carried thereby simply pushes rollers 66 in a circular path along the interior of annular cage 67 without rotating the latter. When the drive shaft 45 is reversed however the rollers 66 are wedged between cam 44a and cage 67 so that the latter is driven. To ensure even laying of cable on storage drum 17, the winch may incorporate a swinging guide 69, Fig. 2.
