Abstract

1,031,936. Spring drum reeling devices. TENSATOR Ltd. Sept. 1, 1964 [Sept. 5, 1963] No. 35186/63. Headings B8B and B8M. A reeling device for a rope 9 comprises a spring drum motor 26, Fig. 3 (not shown), having a hollow torque output drum 2 which is mounted coaxially with variable diameter rope winding on reel 5, the latter being axially slidable into and out of the output drum 2 depending on what diameter is to be lined up with the rope 9. The whole device is mounted in a housing 3 having a rope entry aperture 8. The reel 5 having a conical profile is slidably mounted on a spigot 7 integral with the output drum 2 which itself is journalled on a spindle 4 secured to the housing 3. The reel 5 is moved along the spigot 7 by rotation of a screw 17 threadedly passing through the reel and having an end stop 21. The countersunk head 20 of the screw 17 is received in the end wall of the drum 2 and has a hexagonal slot 22 which is engaged by a key 23 to effect rotation thereof. A plate 18 secured to the drum 2 secures the screw 17 in place. The rope 9 is held in position on the reel 5 by a number of axial vanes 12 secured within the drum 2 and which are slidably received in axial slots in the reel. In the embodiment of Fig. 4, two coaxial spring drum motors are used and the reel adjustably slides between the two drum interiors. The drive force of the two output torque drums 2, 15 are coupled by the slots in the reel 5 always engaging the vanes 12 of both drums. Alternatively, both drum spigots 7, 16 may be keyed to the spindle 4 when the latter is rotatable, or a pinion may engage a toothed ring 14, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown), on each drum 2, 15 or each end of the rope may be attached to each of the drums 2, 15, whereupon the rope emerges from the housing as a loop. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a single torque output drum is used having a spigot 7 extending the width of the housing and the reel 5 is stepped in various diameters. In a final embodiment, Fig. 1 (not shown), a single drum is again used and the reel is stepped and has radial flanges to restrict the rope to the winding area.
