Abstract

866,756. Hose &c. reels. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO. Ltd. Aug. 4, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958], No. 34365/58. Class'99(2). A winding mechanism for electrical cable, hose or other flexible elongated member comprises rotatable and non-rotatable reservoirs for the cable, means for leading the cable to the rotatable reservoir and thence to the non-rotatable reservoir, rotatable coiling means adapted to engage the cable where it passes between the two reservoirs for coiling the cable with respect to the non-rotatable reservoir, and means for simultaneously rotating the rotatable reservoir and the coiling means at such different speeds in relation to one another that the cable is simultaneously coiled with respect to both reservoirs without slackening or kinking of the cable therebetween and with zero overall twist. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the cable 1 is secured by a connector 2 to a fixed drum 3 on the axis of which is a screw-threaded rod 4 extending into a rotatable drum 5 coaxial with the drum 3 and driven by an electric motor 6 through a gear-box 7 and gears 8, 9. An elongated gear 10 also driven by the motor meshes with a geared rim 11 which drives the coiling means comprising freely rotatable grooved pulleys 12, 13 carried by a bar 14 fixed to the rim 11 and having a radial arm 15 terminating in a nut 16 engaging the rod 4. The cable leaves the drum 5 over a freely rotatable guide pulley 17 mounted on a bar 18 having a radial arm 20 carrying a nut 19 engageable with a screw-threaded shaft 21, rotation of the nut being prevented by a slide member 22 in engagement with a fixed rod 23. In a modification, the apparatus comprises a fixed drum within a rotatable outer drum 29, the cable passing through a hollow axle 24 over a freely rotatable guide pulley 25 and a rotatable guide pulley 26 which moves in a direction parallel to its axis and is carried by a member 27 slidable on a rod 28; from the pulley 26 the cable proceeds to the drum 29 which is rotated by a motor 31. The cable passes at 32 through the drum 29, over a coiling mechanism comprising a ring .of planet pulleys 33, and on to a non- rotatable drum 36, the pulleys and drum being movable axially on lead screws 35, 37.
