Abstract

555,522. Tensioning cables. SADLER, P., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. March 25, 1942, No. 3980. [Class 78 (ii)] Flexible electric cables extending between two relatively moving points are kept taut by spring tensioning of a bight of the cable located between two co-axial drums. One of the drums 1 is fixed to a casing base 4 by a stationery shaft 3, the other drum 2 being loosely mounted on the outer end of the shaft. Between the drums 1, 2 is disposed an arm 7 rotatable about the shaft 3 and having attached to it one end of a spiral spring 9, the other end of which is fixed to the shaft 3. The spring 9 is disposed inside a recess 2c in the drum 2, and the outer end of the arm 7 carries a pulley 8 the axis of which is in a plane cutting the shaft 3 at right angles. A fixed arm 10 supports a fairlead comprising two pulleys 11 which may be combined with a stricture to limit the amount of cable pulled out. As withdrawal takes place, the cable leaves one side of the rotating drum 2 and adds on to the other side after passing round the pulley 8 from the reservoir coiled in the opposite sense on the drum 1. In a modification the shaft 3 is fixed to the arm 7 and runs loose in the fixed drum 1. The shaft is constantly urged to rotate in the winding-on direction by a friction clutch the power member of which is coupled by reduction gearing to an electric motor. In a further form 'the clutch is omitted, and a spring- biassed switch introduced into the cable run for control by the tension thereof. When the cable is slack the switch energises the motor in the direction for winding-on the cable; when the tension assumes that of the taken-up state of the cable the current is cut off from the motor, and when the tension further increases, owing to rapid movement apart of the end points, the motor is switched on to rotate in reverse and assist the unwinding by turning the arm 7 in the appropriate direction.
