Abstract

1,196,891. Unwinding wire and the like. ELECTROTHERMAL ENG. Ltd. 6 Oct., 1967 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 48570/66. Heading D1J. As the filamentary material 3 is pulled off the spool 10 it passes over a guide 11 providing a smooth, convex 'guiding surface that is continuous about the axis of the reel and serves to keep the material 3 away from the reel rim, the filamentary material then passing through guide means 12 at the end of an arm 13, the guide means 12 and arm 13 being balanced about the axis of the reel 10. The arms 13 may be flexible. In Fig. 1 the reel 10 is rotated by drive means 17, 18, 19 and the arms 13 are rotatable relatively to the reel 10. A core 2 of non-conductive thread may pass through the reel 10 and the filamentary material 3 may be of metal, for example resistance wire, the material 3 being coiled around the core 2. To ensure that the resultant product has a resistance per unit length that is constant it is passed back and forth over a plurality of pulleys 5 and 6. A first contact is attached to the first pulley of the set of pulleys 5 and a second contact 24 is attached to the last pulley of the set of pulleys 6 whereby there will always exist between the contacts 23, 24 a constant length of the core 2. A servomechanism system 25 is provided to sense the resistance between these contacts continuously and to effect appropriate control of the speed of the take-up motor 8 and thus of the core 2 to maintain the resistance per unit length constant in the finished product. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the reel 10 does not rotate and there is no core 2 passing up through the reel 10. The material from the reel is wound onto a take-up spool.
