Abstract

1,135,825. Skein winding, swift, stop motion. DOBBIE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 April, 1966 [18 May, 1965], No. 16029/66. Headings DID and D1J. A method of skein dyeing yarn comprises winding a predetermined amount of the yarn onto a skein on a collapsible reel 14, see Fig. 1; guiding the yarn transversely of the reel, e.g. with traverse 12, so as to form a skein of constant depth across the reel, stopping the winding and collapsing the reel, removing the yarn as a skein, mounting the skein on a stationary swift, see Fig. 10, and winding the yarn from the stationary swift into a package, see Fig. 12 (not shown). The skein winder has a driven guide roll 12 which has slots 100, 102 arranged so that the rate of traverse of the yarn increases at the extremities of its travel, thus resulting in a constant depth skein even at its edges. The grooves are of different depths and have champhered sides, see Figs. 3, 4 and 5, not shown. The reel 18 can be collapsed by operation of double acting pneumatic unit 70 through air lines (76), (78), see Fig. 2, not shown. The yarn can be wound at 600-1500 yds/min to form a skein 10-40" wide and weighing up to 12 lbs. The stationary swift, Fig. 10 has non-rotating skein support arms 170 and a removable free floating wheel 220. In use the wheel is removed and the arms collapsed, as shown. The skein 200 is then loosely placed over the arms. The wheel is then remounted and the arms expanded pneumatically, see Fig. 11, not shown. The yarn is withdrawn over-end over the rotating wheel In the package winder, Fig. 12 the yarn passes behind pulley 400, over pivoting pulley 406; around pulleys 400 and 406 again, around grooved drive pulleys 360, 362 to provide two complete loops separated by wire 388, under guide pulley 412 and slack take-up device 414, past tension-sensing arm 432, over guide roll 340 and onto the bobbin 354 see also Fig. 13, not shown. Excess tension in the yarn as it passes over pivoting pulley 406 or insufficient tension in the yarn at arm 432 will cause the driving electric motor to be stopped.
