Abstract

321,231. Bevan, A. P., and Bevan, H. L. Aug. 10, 1929. Variable-speed gearing comprises a friction cone 20 driven by a roller 5 which is moved axially to adjust the speed in accordance with the load and with the power of the engine by a centrifugal governor 6 constantly driven by the engine shaft 2. The roller or pinion 5 is fast on a spindle 4 which is adapted to slide within the hollow shaft 2 and is formed with a clutch head 16. The governor comprises weights 11 pulled by springs 12 and connected by links 7 to lugs 8 on the shaft 2 and to rollers 8<1>, which work in a grooved collar 9 upon the spindle 4. the shaft 2 being slotted at 2<x>. In the configuration shown. when the engine turns slowly, the spindle 4 is not driven. On speeding up, the governor 6 pulls spindle 4 to the left so as to engage clutch head 16 with a squared recess 17 in the shaft 2. The pinion 5 now turns and is automatically adjusted along the cone 20 so as to drive inclined shaft 21 at a speed suitable to the load and engine speed.
