[Class 80 (ii).] Variable-speed friction gearing comprises driving and driven pulleys with separable treads 3, 4 and 5, 6, respectively, Fig. 1, connected by an encircling friction ring 10, Fig. 2. Diagonally opposite treads 3, 6 are secured to the driving and driven shafts 1, 2, while the opposite treads 4, 5 are slidably splined to the same shafts. The treads 3, 6 are supported in bearing blocks 11, 12, respectively, which are secured together by a pair of rails 15, Fig. 4, and fixed to a casing 19. The tread 5 is supported in a bearing block 14, Fig. 6, which has a pair of slider arms 14<a>, Fig. 5, which fit on one side of the rails 15. The opposite tread 4 is supported in a bearing block 13 with slider arms 13<a> which fit on the other side of the rails 15. The two pairs of arms 13<a>, 14<a>, after being fitted with the ring 10 in proper engagement, are secured together so that the fixed rails 15 serve as guides for the simultaneous sliding movement of the treads 4, 5. The speed is varied by turning a pinion 17, Fig. 2, which engages a rack 16 on one of the arms 14<a> of the sliding combination.
