Abstract

580,060. Reversing gearing. PLANT, E. A. April 16, 1945, No. 6897/44. [Class 80 (ii)] A pair of expanding pulleys have the outer parts 12, 12b, fixed to a spindle 10 and the inner parts 13, 13b, separated by a collar 17 and thrust bearings 18, 18b, and slidable axially along a sleeve 16 on the spindle. Springs 19, 19b, act on the parts 13, 13b. A freely mounted disc 14 or 14b arranged between the two parts of each pulley supports a Vee-belt when the said parts are separated. For driving the spindle 10 of a potter's lathe, a single continuous belt 11, Fig. 2, passes round the two expanding pulleys and round pulleys 21, 22, the pulley 21 being driven by a motor 20. In the position shown, Fig. 1, both expanding pulleys are disengaged, the belt 11 running on the loose discs 14, 14b. Movement of the inner parts 13, 13b, in one direction lifts the belt 11 from the disc 14 and the pulley 12, 13, drives the spindle 10 in one direction, whereas movement of the said parts in the opposite direction engages the belt 11 with the pulley 12b, 13b, and the spindle 10 is driven in the reverse direction. The parts 13, 13b, may be splined to the sleeve 16.
