Abstract

967,863. Friction clutches. BRECKNELL, WILLISS & CO. Ltd. May 6, 1963 [June 18, 1962], No. 23322/62. Heading F2C. A clutch comprises an inner member 2 rotationally carrying at least one part 4 movable radially by axial movement of a plunger 5 to engage a clutching element 3 with the inner periphery of an outer member 1. The parts 4, three of which are shown, are substantially T-shaped and have curved head surfaces 9 to promote wedging of a ball or roller clutching element 3 against the inner surface of the member 1 in the direction of drive. The plunger 5, which has two diameters 5, 10 for engaged and disengaged conditions, is moved axially by a rack 11 and pinion, a similar clutch being actuated by the remote end of the rack. The two outer members 1 may be V-belt pulleys clutchable to shafts 2 supporting grinding wheels, the two pulleys being driven through a countershaft from a single electric motor.
