Abstract

796,847. Positive clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN AKT.-GES. Jan. 1, 1957 [May 2, 1956], No. 94/57. Class 80 (2). A positive clutch comprises an axially slidable sleeve 5, Fig. 2, having internal splines 4 engaged with teeth on a hub 3 and engageable with a ring of clutch teeth 9 formed on the hub of a gear 7, recesses in the splines 4 forming stops which engage with the teeth 9 when the sleeve has been moved to its fully engaged position. As shown in Fig. 2, the splines 4 within the sleeve 5 are of greater depth than the gaps between the clutch teeth 9 on the gear 7, and recesses 14 are made by removing the end parts of the tops of the teeth 4. Shoulders or stops 15 are thus formed which engage with a corresponding shoulder 15 on the ring of clutch teeth 9 when the clutch is fully engaged. In a modification, Fig. 3, the clutch teeth 9 on the gear 7 are of greater height than the depth of the grooves between the clutch teeth 4 within the sleeve 5, deepening the grooves at the end of the sleeve, making recesses for the teeth 9 and forming stops 20 which limit the movement of the sleeve in the engaging direction. The device is applied to a double clutch arrangement, Fig. 1 (not shown), in which the sleeve 5 is alternatively clutchable to two rings of clutch teeth formed on the hubs of a pair of gears to be connected to a supporting shaft, engagement being effected with the aid of conventional synchromesh friction clutch cones.
