Abstract

1431172 Drive coupling CLARKSON INTERNATIONAL TOOLS Ltd 29 June 1973 [29 June 1972] 30441/72 Heading B3N [Also in Division F2] A drive coupling for rotary cutting tools comprises concentric drive and driven members, with the driven member carrying a tool holder, collet 1, therebeing a coaxial axially movable ring 10 between said members and loaded by a spring 11, the ring is connected to each member by a set of rollers 12 and 9 so that normally the driven member is rotated by the drive member through the ring and the sets of rollers, one set of rollers 12, engage cam slots or grooves 14 in the ring to move the ring axially against spring 11 as the torque load increases, such movement releasing the other set of rollers 9 from driving engagement with its member on excessive torque loading. Preferably there are 3 rollers 12 and 3 rollers 9. The rollers 12 are mounted on pins 14 on a drive sleeve 15. When they move out of their cam slots they engage in slot extensions 17 to hold the members in non-driving positions until reverse rotation is provided. Rollers 9 are on pins 14 on the ring 10 and engage in pockets 8 to transmit drive to sleeve 4 but when ring 10 moves the rollers 9 move into an annular groove 7 in the sleeve thus stopping drive thereto. Sleeve 4 drives spindle 2 via balls 6a. Loading on spring 15 can be altered by sleeve 19.
