Abstract

777,720. Drivers and carriers. PRATT & CO., Ltd., F. May 20, 1955 [May 21, 1954], No. 14936/54. Class 83 (3). A lathe &c. driver comprises at least two work-engaging cam levers or cam jaws 6 mounted on pivots 5 on a ring 3 floating in an annular housing 1 driven by the lathe, each jaw 6 having at least two slots, grooves or the like 7, 8, either of which may engage a driving peg 2 on the housing to vary the gripping diameter of the driver. The ring 3 is centred in the housing by at least one spring 11, attached at one end to the housing and at the other to the ring, and is retained in the housing by plates 15 projecting into a groove 16 in the ring. A cover 14, secured to the front of the pivots 5 by screws 17, may be rotated on the housing to rotate ring 3 and pivot the jaw 6 into an inoperative position in which they are retained by the engagement, in recesses in the periphery of the ring, of spring- pressed plungers 4. The amount of rotation is restricted by stops 20, 21 on the housing in the path of a pin 18 projecting from the ring 3. The jaws 6 may be roughened, as by serrations or teeth, and can be reversed on the pivots to drive in the opposite direction.
