Driving - a r r a n g ements for screw propellers.-In an expanding-pulley gear for use on motor launches &c., each pulley comprises a flat disk 1, 2, a conical disk 9, 10, and segments 6 having dovetail connexions. The pulleys are simultaneously operated by means of a sliding bar 18 provided with inclined surfaces 19 engaging corresponding surfaces on blocks 20 actuating the disks 9, 10. The bar 18 is moved bv worm - andrack or screw-and-nut gearing. To take up the slack of the belt 5, a cam-surface 25 on the bar 18 engages a roller 26 carried by a screwed block 27, or the inclined surfaces 19 may be curved and engage rollers on the block 20.
