Abstract

8844. James, W., and Woodhill, J. C. April 14. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-A changespeed and reversing gear, suitable for motor vehicles and boats, comprises a spur-gear C which may be connected to an internally-toothed ring e through any one of a number of sets of mutually-engaging gears H, H<1> carried by separate rocking plates G. The gear C is carried on a square portion a, Fig. 1, of the driving-shaft A, and the ring e is secured to a disk E fast upon the driven shaft B. The sets of gears H, H<1>, wbich provide for different gear-ratios, are arranged between the gears C, e, and in the same plane. One set comprises an idler H<2>, Fig. 2, for reversing. Each plate G has a pivot-pin g resting in a hole f <1>, Fig. 1, in a fixed plate F. Each plate G is also provided with a stud g<1>, Fig. 5, the studs g<1> all projecting through slots in the plate F into a cam-groove K, Fig. 4, in a rotatable camplate J. The groove K is circular with one throw k<1>, as shown, so as to rock one gear set into engagement while it holds the others positively out of engagement. A solid drive is obtainable in the following manner. The gear C is slidable and carries clutch jaws c, Fig. 1, capable of engaging jaws D secured to the shaft B. The gear C is thrust longitudinally either way by a screwed sleeve L, which is loose upon the shaft A. A nut M, gearing with the screw L, is formed externally with spur teeth engaged constantly by a toothed gear N journaled upon the plate F. The gear N is engaged and operated by a toothed segment S upon a rocking plate O, Fig. 2. The plate O has a stud o engaged and operated selectively by the camgroove K.
