9882. Wise, H. R. April 24. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises an element 23 to be driven, and a disk 42 secured thereto carrying the spindles 40, 41 of one epicyclic train on one side, and the spindles 43 of other trains on the other side. Intermeshing gears 32, 33 on the spindles 40, 41, mesh respectively with a pinion 34 fast on a driving-shaft 5, and with a loose internally-toothed wheel 21. Gears 35 loose on the spindles 43 mesh with a gear 36 fast on the shaft 5, and with a loose internally-toothed wheel 28. Gears 38, also loose on the spindles 43, mesh with a gear 39 fast on the shaft 5, and with a loose internallytoothed wheel 26. A solid drive is obtained by a clutch member 9 slidable on the shaft 5 into engagement with a member 7 on the wheel 21. Three other speed ratios are obtained by holding the wheels 26, 28, 21 severally against rotation by brakes.
