Abstract

6612. Bucknall, I. I., [administratrix of Bucknall, J. L.]. March 16. Variable-speed gearing. - The driven internally-toothed ring 5 of a two-speed gear upon a motor-bicycle &c. is formed in one with a belt pulley or chain-wheel 4, which runs loosely upon a boss 2 fast on the engine shaft 1. The outer and inner members 15, 16 of pairs of intermeshing planetary gears mesh respectively with the ring 5, and with a sun-gear 3 fast upon the boss 2. The gears 15, 16 are carried by a disk 11, which has a conical flange 12 adapted to engage a grip or friction surface 5<a> upon the ring 5 to effect a solid high-speed drive. When the disk 11 is moved to the left, the flange 12 engages a fixed brake surface 8, causing the gearing to come into operation to drive the pulley &c. 4 at reduced speed. The disk 11 turns upon a spindle 10 supported by a removable plate 7 upon the crank-case 6 of the engine. In the Provisional Specification, the invention is also stated to be applicable to drilling-machines.
