[Cognate Application, 14,683/12.] Variable - speed and reversing toothed gearing. -Relates to variable speed gearing, for motor and other cycles, of the kind that is supported on a fixed axle within a hub. A feather or key p slidably secured to the hub k may be engaged alternatively with a driving- ring a or with a ring b, which is driven from the ring a at a different speed through gearing. Pairs of bevel pinions x, x<1> carried on fixed radial spindles connect a toothed ring a<1> on the ring a to a toothed ring l<2> on the ring l. The ring a is driven through a plate clutch b from a belt pulley j. The fixed axle comprises a collar drum u screwed on to a central part g and supporting the pinions x, x<1>. The drum u and a cover t enclose means s for operating the key p. For reversed driving, an additional sliding key n may be provided, adapted to engage a toothed ring m meshing also with the pinions x. The clutch b is normally kept in operative engagement by a spring d.
