Abstract

24,994. Johnson, H. Dec. 2. Motor road vehicles. - Relates to three-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing suitable for motor road vehicles &c., of the type in which interengaging planet-pinions are employed. The driving-shaft A carries a sun-pinion C in mesh with double-width planet - pinions F journaled upon spindles G upon the planet carrier O secured to the driven shaft B. The carrier 0 has a clutch member R adapted to be engaged by a sliding member D, formed in one with an oil-retaining casing, and with an annulus E in mesh with the pinions F. The pinions F mesh also with smaller planetpinions H loose on spindles I upon the carrier O. The pinions H mesh with a sun-pinion J connected by a sleeve with a brake drum K. The high speed is obtained by engaging the clutch parts D, R, when the gear rotates solid. The second and third speeds are obtained by braking the drum K and the ring E, respectively. The pinions F are extended to the right to form toothed pinions N, which mesh with an additional sunwheel L. When the wheel L is held against rotation by means of a brake drum M, a reverse is obtained. The clutch is actuated by a cone Y and spring arms S. To prevent the carrier 0 from moving bodily to the right when the clutch is engaged, arms T, Fig. III, extend from the portion of the carrier on the right between the pinions F, H to a thrust-ring P between the pinions C, J.
