553. Thomas, G. Jan. 9. Motor road vchicles.-Relates to variable-speed gearing, applicable to motor-cars, of the type in which the drive takes place through an epicyclic train, one of the elements of which is driven at a variable speed by disk and roller friction gearing, and consists in mounting both parts of the friction gear upon rotating parts of the epicyclic gear. The epicylic gear consists of a sun-wheel A upon a shaft H, planet pinions B supported by a carrier C, and an internally-toothed ring D. A friction wheel J slides on a feather on the shaft H across a disk I upon a spindle E carried by the ring D. The disk I is connected by toothed gearing, or by a universal joint, with a worm F in mesh with a worm-wheel G on the carrier C. Relative motion of the parts D, J actuates the carrier C. The engaging parts of the friction gearing may be covered with material to increase friction.
