Abstract

1198. Richards, J.. and Bates, G. Jan. 18. Toothed gearing.-A flexible connection, adapted for use with internal-combustion engines &c., comprises a toothed spur or bevel epicyclic train, in which the planet-pinions are mounted upon the driving-member, and the inner and outer elements of the train are connected together by a spiral spring. The gear normally rotates as a whole, but the spring allows a limited planetary motion of the driving-pinions to minimize shocks or fluctuations of power. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a chain-wheel or pulley 2, fast on the shaft, is driven from a chain-wheel or pulley 1 through a flexible connection comprising planet-pinions 5 loosely mounted on the boss of the driving-member, a pinion 6 fast on the shaft, and a pinion 7 connected to the shaft or pinion 6 through a coaxial spiral spring 10 in a casing 11 to which the pinion 7 is secured. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 7, coaxial shafts 1, 4 form the driving and driven members, planet-pinions 5 being carried by a disc on the shaft 1. The annular wheel 7 is connected to the boss of the central pinion 6, fast on the shaft 4, by means of a spiral spring 10 in the casing 11. Coaxial shafts, as shown in Fig. 7, may be connected by a bevel-train and spring corresponding to the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, while the connection between the cham-wheels or pulleys l, 2, Fig. 1, may comprise a spur epicyclic train, as shown in Fig. 7.
