Variable-speed and reversing gearing. - Relates to gearing, suitable for motor-vehicles, of the kind in which a pinion such as d upon a driving-shaft c is caused to mesh with one of a series of internally-toothed gears g, h, j upon a driven shaft f. The shaft c is supported by a bearing e situated eccentrically upon a fixed circular casing a. The shaft f is carried by a bearing m placed eccentrically upon a disk b, which can be turned inside the casing a. For the highest speed, the disk b is turned to bring the shaft f into line with the shaft c, which is then advanced until the pinion d engages the gear g clutch-wise. To obtain two lower speeds, the disk b is turned to aline the teeth of the gear h or of the gear j with the teeth of the gear d, which is then advanced into mesh. To obtain reversal, an idler between the gears d, j may be employed, or an external gear n. To ensure proper alinement of the gears before meshing, the shaft c is connected by an arm p to a pin q, which works in a guide r, and is advanced along with the shaft c so as to engage one of a series of apertures such as s, t, u, Fig. 2, in the disk b. Power is transmitted from the shaft f through universal joints or toothed gearing.
