A casing 4 containing planetary gearing is supported on both sides by helical springs 14. . . 17 located between projections 19 on the casing and supports 18. In a modification, shown in Fig. 3, the supports 18 are replaced by rods 20 which are adapted to oscillate by means of a ball-and-socket joint 21 and cup springs 22, 23 or annular springs are employed. An electric motor or turbine 1, through a shaft 2, drives a sun gear 3 meshing planet pinions 5 on a carrier 6 connected to an output shaft 8. A toothed annulus 7 is mounted in the housing 4. A variable speed gear, shown in Fig. 4, comprises a sun gear 31 driven through gearing 26, 27 from a motor 25, an annulus 43 on a planet housing 36 which is driven externally by a pinion 42 from a motor 40, and planets 44 on a carrier 45 having a jawclutch coupling 47 with a shaft 48 which carries the sun gear 49 of a second epicyclic gear. An output shaft 53 is connected to a planet carrier 51 and planets 50 mesh an annulus 54 mounted in a housing 34 which encloses the two epicyclic gear stages and the two driving motors, and is supported on both sides by springs 55. In a further modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a motor 60, through a worm gear 61 and gears 62, 63, drives an annulus 77, and a motor 66, through a worm gear 67, drives a sun gear 68.
