Abstract

19,986. Jeffares, W. Sept. 4. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing for motorcycles and light motor-vehicles has a carrier D supporting two or more sets of planet-pinions G, H, engaging controllable sun-pinions M, N, and also other pinions J engaging a driven externally-toothed wheel K, a plate clutch C<2> being interposed between the driving-member C and the carrier, and enclosed by the driven hub or shell L. For the direct drive, the planet-pinion spindles are locked to the wheel K by a spider P, which is slid upon the spindles to bring the teeth P<2> into engagement with the wheel. The spider is moved by the flange O<3> of a non- rotatable member O, which has internal teeth O<2> to engage the pinion N or the teeth M<2> on an extension of the pinion M, according to which lower gear is required. The parts D, E<2> of the carrier are connected by bolts E carrying springs C<2> which tend to pack the clutchplates . together. To obtain a reverse gear, another set of planetpinions meshing with a further controllable sunpinion may be used, or the wheel K may be releasable from the hub and adapted to be held stationary in order to drive the first sunpinion, engaged with the driven hub or shaft, in the reverse direction. According, to the Provisional Specification. the driving - shaft is mounted in hangers, one of the hangers lying along the shaft, and a spring engaging abutments on the hanger and the member O to force this member always in one direction.
