Abstract
9557. Johnson, G. W., [Perret, G. L. A.]. April 17. Variable-speed and reversing epicyclic gearing comprises planetary bevel-gears J, R joined together in pairs and meshing with loose sun-wheels controlled by electro - magnetic clutches and brakes similar to the arrangement described in Specification 1853/12. An odd number of controllable sun-wheels, such as D', E<1>, H', are employed. The planetary gears are mounted on a shaft B, which crosses a driven shaft A at right-angles. A driving-shaft K in line with the shaft A carries a flywheel F provided with electro-magnetic clutches D, E. The clutches D, E, when energized, connect the wheel F to the wheels D<1>, E<1>, respectively. Electro-magnetic brakes G, H are adapted to hold the gears E<1>, H<1> against rotation, respectively. The first or lowest speed is obtained by clutching the wheel D' to the wheel F and anchoring the wheel H<1>. The second speed results when the wheel E<1> is clutched to the wheel F and the wheel H' is anchored. The third speed is a solid drive obtained by clutching both the wheels D<1>, E<1> to the wheel F. This last speed may be replaced by a reversed drive by omitting the gear E<1> and using an additional sun gear on the other side of the shaft B. Five or a larger odd number of sun-wheels may be used.
