10,539. Pollard, G., and Menco-Elma Syndicate. March 8. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing is controlled by positively-acting clutches and brakes brought into engagement electromagnetically. Pairs of planetary bevel-gears 38, 39 mesh with loose bevelwheels 12, 41 and 16, 42 respectively. The planetary gears are mounted on a shaft 40, which crosses at right-angles and is secured to a driven shaft 13. A driving-shaft 15 in line with the shaft 13 carries a magnetic member 2 with electric coils 17, 18 adapted to attract electro - magnetically positive clutch members 9, 64 upon the gears 12, 16 respectively. The members 9, 64 are movable, against the action of springs, into engagement with positive clutch members 65, 66 on the member 2. Similar positive braking-members 29, 45, 46 upon the gears 42, 41 are adapted to be operated by coils 30, 33, 49 upon fixed magnetic members 32, 50. For a first speed, the gear 12 is clutched to the member 2, and the gear 42 is held against rotation. For a second speed, the gear 16 drives, while the gear 42 is held. A third speed is obtained when the gear 12 drives and the gear 41 is held. The fourth speed is a solid drive obtained by clutching both the gears 12, 16 to the member 2. For reversed driving, the gear 12 drives while the gear 16 is held. Some of the clutches and brakes only may be positively-acting, while the others act frictionally.
