Abstract

25,476. King, A. C., King, J., and Hamer, F. Nov. 2. [Addition to 15,322/08.] Variable-speed epicyclic gearing in which the motion of the planetary elements is retarded by a magnetic field, as described in the parent Specification, comprises also frictional means for assisting this retardation. To a driving-shaft 1 is secured a casing 3, which carries electromagnets 5 and their armatures 6, these being secured to spindles 7. Planetary gears 20, fast upon sleeves 8 surrounding the spindles 7, mesh with a gear 16 secured to the driven shaft 2. The sleeves 8 carry disks 10 with surfaces 14, 12, which are modified for engaging frictionally with surfaces 15 upon the casing 3, and with surfaces 13 upon nuts 11 screwing upon the spindles 7, respectively. The surfaces 12, 13 are pressed together by the nuts 11, so that normally the gears 20 are clutched to the spindles 7. When the magnets 5 are energized, the armatures 6 are retarded by electromagnetic action, causing the pinion 20 to tend to drive the gear 16. The armatures 6 are also pulled to the left, causing the surfaces 14 to be thrust against the surfaces 15 and so augmenting the turning moment upon the gear 16. Variation in speed is effected by varying the energizing-current. In a modification, two sets of controllable planetary trains in the casing 3 are combined with an external planetary system controlled by brakes, to constitute variablespeed and reversing gearing of wider range. Specification 19,431/09 is also referred to.
