Abstract
6842. Lake, H. W., [Cutler-Hammer Clutch Co.]. March 22. Naval mountings.-Consists in an arrangement comprising two motors, differential gearing, and reversing-gearing for driving turrets and guns in either direction at speeds which may be varied by small amounts through a wide range. The reversing-gearing is operated by electro-magnetic friction clutches, and these clutches and the motors may be controlled by a single switch device. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the motors M, M' and the differential gear D are on the left of a driven pinion 41. A double clutch C and gearing for driving the pinion 41 in one or the other direction are arranged on the right. The motor shafts 15, 16 carry pinions 29, 31 constantly driving wheels 28, 30, which are connected to a shaft 23 through the differential gearing D. The shaft 23 is secured to the carrier 21, Fig. 2, of planet-wheels 20 which mesh with gears 17, 19 secured to the wheels 28, 30, respectively. The clutch C comprises a central member 32 secured to the shaft 23 and carrying electro-magnetic coils for attracting loose outer members 33, 34, respectively. A gear 35 secured to the member 33 meshes with a gear 36 secured to the shaft 40 that carries the pinion 41. A similar gear 37 connects the member 34 to the shaft 40 through an idler 38 for reversing. The motors M, M<1> and the clutch C are controlled by the device shown in Fig. 6. In Fig. 8 a form is shown with the motors M, M' and separate sets of reversing-gearing and clutches C<1>, C<2> and C<3>, C<4> arranged on opposite sides of a bevel differential gearing D. An arrangement comprising a large and a small motor is also described.
