Abstract

27,031. King. J. B. Dec. 12. Motor road vehicles. -Relates to change-speed transmission gearing, more especially for automobiles and the like, the object being to provide a gradual change of gear by operating the main shaft through differential gearing from independent engines, the ratio of the speeds of which is varied. The rear-engine shaft A is in line with the fore-engine shaft B, and parallel to them is arranged the main drive shaft C. Fast on the shaft A are the carrier G and the spur-wheel M. The shaft B drives the bevel pinion H, while the wheels L, I, which are fixed to each other, run loosely on the shaft. Two bevel pinions J, K are supported by the carrier G and mesh with the pinions H, I. The wheels L, M gear respectively with wheels 0, N running loosely on the main drive shaft C, to which is rigidly attached the carrier P. This carrier supports two bevel pinions Q, R meshing with two others N<1>, O<1> integral respectively with the wheels N, O. The whole is contained in a gear box F cast in one piece with the crank chambers D, E and the supports W. When the shaft B rotates at three times the speed of the shaft A and in the same direction, the wheels L, M, and consequently the pinions N<1>, O<1>, rotate with the same speed in opposite directions. The carrier P and the shaft C are therefore at rest. Rotation of the shaft C in either direction is obtained by accelerating or retarding one of the shafts A, B. In place of the spur-wheels L, M, N, O, chain and sprocket gearing may be substituted.
