17,728. Baker, G. S. Sept. 4. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to epicyclic variable-speed and reversing gearing for vehicles &c. The pinion B on the driving-shaft A gears with the first of a set of compound planet pinions C which is mounted in a cage E, E<1> free to rotate about the axes of the driving-shaft A and the driven shaft G. Each planet pinion gears with a corresponding internal wheel F ; that wheel in gear with the last pinion is secured to the driven shaft ; the others are provided with brakes H, so that any one of them may be locked according to the speed required. To drive the shaft G in the opposite direction, one of the intermediate pinions C is made smaller than the last pinion. As shown in Fig. 6, the brake rings are cast with the casing L and are brought into action by screws drawing together lugs formed on their upper ends ; the screws and band-wheels may be removed from one brake ring to another as required.
