Variable-speed epicyclic a r i n g.-In epicyclic variable-speed and reversing gearing for motor road vehicles the driving or the driven shaft 3 extends undivided through the gearing and supports (a) a larger toothed wheel 4 driven at constant speed from the engine 1 by chain gearing 5, 6, (b) a co-axial smaller toothed wheel 13 driven at variable speed from the engine shaft by means of expanding pulleys 14, 19, and (c) the two bearings of a drum 10 carrying planet-pinions 7, 9, which gear with the toothed wheels 4, 13. As shown in Fig. 1, the drum 10 is fixed to the driven shaft 3. In a modified arrangement, the engine shaft is in line with the driven shaft, and the expanding pulley 19 is mounted on a counter-shaft driven by a belt ; the driving-shaft, to which the larger toothed wheel 4 is fixed, passes undivided through the gearing, and the drum is connected to a sleeve fixed to the driven shaft.
