Abstract

13,857. New, A. G., Donkin, R., and Electric Motive Power Co. July 5. Propelling. - Relates to variable - speed and reversing gearing for tramcars &c. The carrier D of an epicyclic train is driven direct from the motor E by chain gearing E<1>; the wheel A of the same train is likewise driven from the motor, but through a variable-speed belt gear by regulating which the speed and direction of motion imparted to the driven wheel C<2> of the train may be varied ; this wheel is shown connected to the carrier A' of the compensating-gear through which the wheels of the vehicle are driven. The belt gear consists of a countershaft B, and two expanding pulleys B<1>, B<2> coupled respectively by belts G, F<4> to pulleys G<1>, F<1>, carried in arms G<4> , F<3> mounted coaxially with the epicyclic train. The two pairs of arms are connected by a cord H, passing over guide-pulleys H<1> so that, as one of the pulleys F<1>, G<1> is drawn to the left, by the increase in diameter of the corresponding expanding pulley, the other is drawn to the left to take up the slack of the belt consequent upon the diminution in the diameter of the other expanding pulley. The pulley F<1> is driven by chain gear from the sleeve upon which the carrier D is mounted, and the pulley G' drives in the same way the wheel A of the train. The expanding pulleys consist each of a series of rim bars S which engage at their ends in spirallygrooved discs S<1> and in radially-slotted discs S<2>. The discs S' are fixed to the shaft, and the discs S<2> to sleeves which carry toothed wheels K<1>, K<2>, between which and secured to the shaft is a third wheel K of slightly different size. The wheels are enclosed in a brake-wheel K<3>, and gear with a common pinion K<5> mounted thereon, so that, when the brake is applied and the wheel retarded, a relative motion is set up between the discs S<1>, S<2> of each pulley and a corresponding increase or diminution of diameter takes place. To make a change in the opposite sense, the brake wheel K<3> is rotated at a higher speed than the shaft, by applying the brake to a wheel K<4> which is geared to it by an epicyclic train. The power may be imparted direct to the wheel C<2> or to the countershaft B instead of to the carrier D. The epicyclic train may be mounted on a shaft parallel and geared to that of the road wheels ; in this case the arms F<3>, G<4> may be keyed to the shaft which rocks with them.
