Abstract

Variable-speed belt gearing.-In belt gearing, suitable for motor-cycles, of the kind comprising a pair of expanding pulleys, each having one movable flange 4, Fig. 2, slidable on the boss 3 of the other flange 1, each pulley has a controlling-screw 6 of quick pitch, which is held against rotation and is adapted to be moved endways to operate the sliding flange. The screws 6 engage nuts 7, which are adapted to turn and are held against endways movement by a suitable device 8. The nuts 7 are rigid with sprocket-wheels geared together by a chain 10, so that as one pulley expands the other contracts. In one arrangement, one pulley of the pair drives the other; and the driven pulley is suitably geared to the driving road wheel of the vehicle. In another arrangement shown in Fig. 6, one pulley B arranged above the driving- pulley A serves as a jockey to guide the belt, which passes over both these pulleys and also over a driven pulley C of fixed diameter. In this arrangement, superposed belts 12, 15 may be employed, the belt 12 passing over the pulleys A, B only, and the belt 15 passing over and residing in a groove in the belt 12 and transmitting power to the pulley C. A suitable construction of the belt 12 is shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Chain links 13 connect together metal links 16 of V shape to which are secured leather blocks 14.
