Abstract
17,872. Wilkins, C. H. Dec. 22. Expanding p u l l e y s.- In expanding-pulley variable-speed gearing of the type in which a central intermediate pulley gear is moved towards and away from the driving and driven shafts to vary the gear, housed driving- flanges are employed. Housed flanges D, Fig.IV, are secured on a hollow shaft C, a loose intermediate housed flange E being engaged on either side by belts F, one driven from the driving-shaft and the other driving the driven shaft. The shaft C turns on ball bearings on a spindle carrying at one or both ends inclined sleeves I sliding on guides H, so that movement of the pulley between the driving and driven shafts automatically slides the flange E and varies the gear and at the same time keeps the belts in alinement. Other means for moving the pulley obliquely may be employed. Further fast and loose flanges may be used, so that the number of belts may be increased. As shown in Fig. VI, a central driving- belt and two driven belts are employed, the flanges D being secured to an outer hollow shaft C carrying sleeves M engaging the oblique guides, and the flanges E being secured by keys K engaging slots in the shaft C to a loose inner shaft J.
