Variable-speed gearing; differential or balance gearing. - In combined friction variable and differential gearing, the driving- shaft a carries two disks b, c, pressed together by springs and formed with bevelled faces to engage a bevelled annulus h carried by a disk f loose on the two-part driven shaft e. The gear is varied by moving either of the shafts a, e, relatively to the other. The annulus h is secured to the disk f by bolts i which also serve as pivots for rollers k which engage with grooves formed in spring-pressed disks n, o, each fixed on one of the parts of the shaft e.
