Abstract

241,695. Ashworth, P. B. Oct, 4, 1924. Variable-speed friction gearing of the type in which aligned driving and driven rollers 1, 2 are interconnected by idler discs 5, the axes of which are radial to the roller axis. The disc axes are supported in a loose ring 3, which is rotated in its casing 4 by the torque transmitted so to actuate means to press the discs 5 upon the rollers 1, 2 with a force varying with the torque transmitted. Four alternative pressureproducing means are shown. Struts 8 are pivoted on blocks 9 in the frame, a screw 11 carries a pinion x engaging a stationary track y, a roller 12 engages a fixed incline 13, or a rack z engages a pinion 14 carried on an arm 15 pivoted in the casing. An arm 6 is secured to the ring 3 and pressed by the spring 7 to initiate frictional engagement between the parts 1, 2, 5, and may be handactuated either to disconnect the gearing or to maintain frictional engagement if the direction of drive is reversed. The thrust of the discs 5 is distsibut'ed to the rollers 1, 2 according to their distance from the disc centres and thus according to the torques which they transmit, sufficient flexibility being provided in the construction to enable this action to take place.
