Abstract

320,292. Reina, G. B. Jan. 2, 1929. Variable-speed epicyclic and friction gearing.- In a variable-speed gearing combining discs and rollers with an epicyclic train, the driving torque is transmitted to the driving disc by a set of circularly arranged spindles which take up an inclined position and act as wedges. The spindles 3, with spherical ends 3a, are arranged in a cage 4 on the driving-shaft, and their enlarged opposite ends 3b press on a cushion 5' lodged in a spherical socket in the disc 5. The spindles pass through holes 30 in a muff 31 secured to an elastic plate 18 fixed to the disc. The disc drives tangentially arranged rollers 6, 7, which are tangential to discs 9, 10 rotating toothed wheels 12 gearing with a rotatable bell 20. Rollers 16, 17 engaged by the discs 9, 10 drive a disc 15 rotating a sun wheel 25 engaging planetary pinions 22 and 23, carrying an arm 24 keyed to the driven shaft, and engaging with the internally toothed bell 20. Variations of speed are obtained by moving across the discs the rollers mounted on screwed spindles 8, 26 rotated by toothed wheels 27, 28. In a modified construction shown in Fig. 2, the enlarged ends of the spindles are spherical with a radius of curvature greater than the length of the spindles, and the control mechanism comprises brackets moved by an arm 33 rotated by a spindle 34, the rollers 6a, 16a, 17a sliding on the shafts 8a, 26a.
