Abstract

121,123. Barbier, G. M. Nov. 28, 1917, [Convention date]. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing; differential gearing.-In variable-speed disk-and-roller gearing, the driven rollers 3, 4, Fig. 1, are mounted loosely on the driven shaft 5 and engage friction, toothed, or bevel planet-pinions 7 carried by a spider 6 keyed to the shaft 5. In the position shown, the rollers are driven at the same speed in opposite directions and no drive is transmitted to the shaft 5. When the rollers are displaced relatively to the disk, they are driven at different speeds, and the spider 6 then rotates and drives the shaft 5. The disk 1 may be spherical, speedchanges being effected by swinging the driving- shaft as represented by the angle a; or the disk may be flat, in which case the rollers and spider are moved together along the shaft 5. Fig. 4 shows the device combined with differential gearing consisting of bevel, toothed, or friction pinions 12 on the spider 6 engaging sun-wheels 10. 11 fixed to the driven wheels 13, 14.
