Abstract

325,633. Gerdes, A. F. Dec. 17, 1928. Variable-speed epicyclic and friction gearing.- In a friction wheel variable-speed gear in which transmission wheels 15, 16 rotating on spindles 13, 14 swing between hollow curved bevel wheels 4, 5 splined to driving and driven pulleys 2<a>, 3<a>, variations of speed are effected by moving the wheels conjointly in an axial direction by levers 8, 9 pivoted to 6, 7 and operated by a connecting-rod 10. To provide positive movement of the levers, the rod is provided with abutment rings 18, 19, and a screwed cap 20 formed as a hand grip regulates the pressure of a spring 12 which takes up slight variations in the distance apart of the wheels. In Fig. 2, the friction gear is combined with a bevel epicyclic train in which the wheel 4 drives a sun-pinion 22, the wheel 5 rotates a sun-wheel 25 formed simultaneously with the gear casing 24, and the planets 26 rotate on trunnions keyed to the driven shaft 27. The spindles 14, 15 are prevented from swinging transversely by longitudinal guide grooves 28, 29, and the device may be provided with a pedal 30 and an abutment pin 31 corresponding to the position of idle running of the gears.
