Abstract

151,012. Morton, S. S. Sept. 15, 1919, [Convention date]. Drum or barrel winding-machines; driving- gear.-In variable speed reversible ratchet driving-mechanism for use with hoisting-apparatus, tractors, &c., a cam or the like turning with the driving-shaft operate toggle-mechanism to drive a drum through friction ratchet gear. The driving- shaft carries a cam or the like 6 bearing on a roller 14 at the joint of toggle-links 3, 2, one of which carries a roller 7 bearing on a curved guide 8 and the other is connected to a lever 17 forming part of a ratchet drive 5 for the driven shaft 1 which comprises a band 16 adjustably secured at its ends in the lever 17 and surrounding the driven drum 15. A second link 2a may connect the toggle joint to a second similar ratchet drive 5' adapted for driving the drum 15 in a reverse direction. In order to vary the speed of drive and to produce forward or reverse drive through the link 2 or the link 2a, the link 3 is adjustable along the track 8 by a linkage comprising a leaf-spring lever 11 laterally supported by lever arms 10 and operated through a link 36 by a lever 34 turning on centres 38 or on a centre below the link 36. The forward and reverse ratchets 5, 5<1> may be thrown in and out of action or may be set so as to give a braking effect during the return stroke of either ratchet, by use of links 21 connected to the levers 17 and to leaf-spring levers 22 turning with a shaft 24 which is controlled by a lever 25. In the position shown, both ratchet gears are in inoperative position. Several gears of the kind described may connect the same or different driving and driven shafts and may be divided into two sets driving two drums 15 and controlled by a single lever 34 which has a T-end. engaging two links 36, each controlling one set of rollers 7 so that when the lever 34 is turned on its centres 38 all the links 3 are simultaneously adjusted in the same direction, while when it is rotated on its own axis, the sets of links 3 are turned in opposite directions to vary the speeds and directions of drive of the drums 15 as is required for steering tractors and in hoisting-apparatus &c. The driving-shaft is driven by a shaft 33 and bevel gearing 31. The lever 34 is provided with a collar 53 engaging in notches 52 in arched quadrant members 50 turning on centres 51 and pressed against the collar 53 by a spring 54 which allows swinging and rotation of the lever 34. A stop 54 secured to one of the members 50 limits the motion of the lever. The whole of the gearing is contained in an oil-filled casing.
