Abstract

Change-speed and reversing gearing; differential driving.-Comprises friction transmission gearing for tractors in which is employed a reversible internal-combustion engine 1 having a friction roller 6 on each end of its crank-shaft 4, the rollers being adapted to be engaged independently by inner and outer grooved rings 10, 11 on wheels 9 mounted loosely on eccentric sleeves 8 carried by pins 7 fixed to the engine cylinder. The sleeves 8 are rotated by means of hand-levers 14 each having three set positions in which the roller is engaged by one of the surfaces 10, 11 or is free from both. The wheels 9 carry chain sprockets 13 for transmitting the drive to the wheels of the tractor. Thus, by moving both levers together the wheels 9 can be driven together, say, at a low speed forward and at a high speed backward, while by reversing the engine a low speed backward is obtained and a high speed forward. For steering, one wheel can be driven separately, or for sharp curves the two wheels can be driven in opposite directions and at different speeds.
