Abstract

176,514. Lanchester, F. W. Dec. 8, 1920. Change-speed gearing; disconnectible gearing; transmission gear of invariable ratio.-Comprises friction driving-gear in which the road wheels are driven through rollers which engage the periphery of the wheels and through which the weight of the vehicle is transmitted to the wheels, the rollers being provided with concave rims to maintain the relative lateral positions of the wheels and the body of the vehicle. The load is transmitted to the wheels through rollers D, E which bear on the wheels, the rollers D being mounted on the engine or driving shaft S. Push-bars M are connected to the axle A and a pedal R so that when the pedal, or a hand-lerver N, is operated the bars are pushed backward and move the road wheels away from the driving rollers D thus disengaging the drive. Further operation of the pedal forces the road wheels against fixed brakeblocks P. The bars M may be detachably connected to the axle, so that when the body is raised it is free from the road wheels and the axle. In a 'modification, the idle rollers E are replaced by links pivoted to the body and to the axle, and the rollers D drive either through friction rings encircling the rollers or through bands passing round the driving-rollers and other rollers, so that slip may take place between the bands or rings and the rollers, instead of between the rollers and the road wheels. According to the Provisional Specification an additional pair of smaller driving- rollers may be provided to give a lower speed ratio..
