Abstract

20,407. Roots, J., and Venables, C. E. Sept. 27. Motor road vehicles. -Relates to two-speed chain and toothedwheel driving-gear with reversing - arrangements for the slower speed, and also to means for allowing slip. The gear is described in connection with an oil engine. Fig. 2 shows in plan the arrangement adopted in the case of a heavy vehicle, a portion of the gear being shown to an enlarged scale in Fig. 3. For slow speeds, the countershaft Z is driven from the motor shaft B by the chain D'. Reversing is effected by throwing the clutch E out of gear, putting the clutch G into gear, and transmitting the motion through the intermediate shaft W and the chain F<2>. The shaft W carries a chain-wheel F engaging with the outside of the chain D'. For quick speeds, both the clutches E and G are thrown out of gear and the clutch C on the motor shaft (or it may be on the countershaft) is put in gear. The countershaft is then driven by the chain C<2>. In the case of a light vehicle the toothed gear shown in Fig. 4 is employed, consisting of the four wheels R-R<3> enclosed in a casing. B is the motor shaft, and B<2> an intermediate shaft. For quick speeds the wheel R<1> is connected to the shaft B by the clutch S, and motion is transmitted through the friction clutch R<5>, R<6>, which is constructed to allow nearly half slip unless lateral pressure is brought to bear by the handle S' on the wheel R<1> and so on the portion R<5> of the clutch. For slow speeds, the clutch S is brought into engagement with the wheel R, and motion is transmitted through the wheel Rand chain-wheel T. For reversing, the wheel T is thrown out of gear by the clutch R<4>, and the wheel R<2> is brought into action, motion being thus transmitted through all four wheels and the clutch R<5>, R<6>. In this case, also, slip may be prevented by imparting lateral pressure to the wheel R' by means of the clutch R<4> and a flange or shroud on the wheel R<2>. Fig. 5 shows an arrangement for allowing slip which also serves as a balance gear. The chainwheel V<2> is held by frictional contact on two conical wheels V, V<1>, the former being fast on the axle and the latter fast on a tube I' which carries the hub U<1> of one of the road wheels. The cones are pressed together and into the chain-wheel by the action of a light spring V<3>. The clutches C, E and G or S and R<4> are controlled by two handles contiguous to the driver's seat.
