Abstract
27,525. Boult, A. J., [Darracq & Co., A.]. Dec. 30. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to driving and braking mechanism applicable to motor carriages, and also to tricycles and the like furnished with pedalling gear. Fig. 1 shows in horizontal section, and Fig. 2 in side elevation, one form of the driving-mechanism. Motion is transmitted from the driving-shaft A to the driven shaft B, which is in two parts connected by differential spur and pinion gear. by means of a spur-wheel D, with which can be made to engage either the pinion E or E' according to the speed desired. These pinions are carried on a swinging arm F, the movement of which is limited by fixed stops. The spur - wheel D is composed of a central portion D<1> and an outer toothed ring, which is kept in frictional engagement with the central part by a conical ring O<1> pressed between the two by springs. The springs and conical ring are so adjusted as to be able to transmit only the maximum power desired ; owing to slip being thus possible, shock is avoided when the gear is charged or at other times. When pedalling gear is provided, the gear includes a chain-wheel L, and the whole gear is enclosed in a suitable casing. This surrounds the chain-wheel closely and prevents the chain from coming off ; in the casing is an opening M for taking the chain off or putting it on. The chain-wheel is connected with the axle by a roller clutch, so that it is free after the motor has started. A brake drum is provided at N<11>. In a modification, Fig. 4, there is combined with the chain-wheel a second clutch that acts only in the opposite direction to the driving - clutch. By means of this the brake can be applied by backpedalling. The backward motion is communicated from the chain-wheel L to the brake, so as to put it into action through the medium of a toothed wheel M<4> and sector.
