Abstract

12,777. Gloag, A. M., and Fletcher, R. W. J. June 22. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to change-speed and reversing toothed driving-mechanism for motor cars, motor cycles, and other vehicles. On the driving-shaft is keyed a pinion 1, Fig. 2, so that it can be slid along by the sleeve 30. It can thus be put in gear with any one of three sets of planet-wheels 8 carried by discs 4, 6, 7, which, together with a disc 5, are rigidly secured together by cottars and pins 10. The sets of planet-wheels each gear with internally-toothed wheels 11,12, 13, each of which, as well as the disc 5, is capable of being gripped or locked by means of brake bands 17. When the pinion 1 is put in gear with any one of the three sets of planet-wheels carried by the discs 4, 6, 7, and the corresponding internallytoothed wheel 11, 12, 13 is gripped, the chain-wheel 19 is driven forwards at the corresponding speed through the sleeve 18 and clutch 21, 22. When the disc 5 is gripped so as to hold the disc 4, the wheel 11 is driven iu a reverse direction ; this motion is transmitted, if desired, to the chainwheel 19 through a sleeve 14 which is attached to the wheel 11, the clutch 21, 22 being disengaged and the member 22 being made to engage with the sleeve 14. The gear is changed by a single handle 26 adjustable in a slotted guide and mounted on a sliding shaft 27 carrying an arm 29 by which the pinion sleeve 30 is shifted, and also carrying cams 38, 39 by which, as shown in Fig. 3, the appropriate brake bands 17 are tightened.
